The Fatback Band + Soul Central
The Fatback Band, formed in New York City in 1970 by drummer Bill Curtis, is a renowned American funk and disco band. Known for their energetic “street funk” style, they gained popularity in the 1970s and 1980s with hits like “(Do The) Spanish Hustle,” “I Like Girls,” and “Backstrokin’.” Their 1979 single “King Tim III (Personality Jock)” is often cited as the first commercially released hip-hop single. The band’s initial lineup included Johnny King, Johnny Flippin, George Williams, Earl Shelton, George Adams, and Gerry Thomas. Over the years, they have continued to perform and influence various genres, including funk, disco, and hip-hop.
